7-8-23: Final Preparations

We were setting the stage for DD (Dear Daughter) in a Spica cast, with surgery just around the corner. This is it—the last weekend before surgery. The item we needed most was a Spica table. This table would allow our DD to sit up comfortably and safely in her cast, providing a table area in front of her. It's something that needs to be specially made, crafted by you, purchased used, or handed down by a family with a previous Spica-casted baby or toddler. The last two options are often facilitated through social media groups focused on DDH, marketplaces, or a group called Spica Tables/Spica Chairs/Spica Gear – DDH – Buy/Sell/Donate – USA'

It was through this group that we found a Spica table from another family that was concluding their Spica journey and no longer needed it. The group serves families all over the U.S., so we monitored it closely. When one came up relatively locally, we pounced. My husband found one, and the family that passed it down was happy to do so at no cost, just as they had received it. I've seen many families on this website doing the same thing. These tables are sturdy, having been highly used, and are passed on to the next family dozens of times. We certainly plan to do the same thing and I look forward to the day when we can return the favor!

Unexpected Outcomes

When we picked up the Spica table, we acquired much more than that. The family that generously gave the Spica table to us invited us in (as we had to travel over an hour), introduced us to their child who had gone through this journey, shared their experiences, showed us the scarring from the procedure, and took the time to address our concerns and questions. We hadn't planned to spend much time with them, but there was an immediate connection between what they had gone through and what we are about to experience. Since then, we have stayed connected with this family and plan to do so throughout our journey.

It was also a pleasant surprise to find out that her father was a retired orthopedic surgeon. We were able to show him the X-ray images of our DD (Dear Daughter) and share our experiences. It was reassuring to hear him say that our orthopedic surgeon’s plans align with his, and he feels like we are in great hands with our doctor. Overall, this feels like a ray of sunshine in the dark clouds that have been over us since this journey began, despite it only being the beginning.

**Edit: If you would like to see the list of items we find most beneficial in our journey, visit our 'Must-Have Products' tab for more information. But hands down, the most valuable item is still our Spica Table!
